What do I do with a USB hub port that has gone through a power surge?

Just a few minutes ago, my iPod USB device didn’t work, and a pop-up on the bottom right of my screen appeared, saying the USB device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port.

How should I fix this? I pressed reset as it told me to, but it still didn’t seem to work. What should I do?

The error is very straightforward: you have a USB powered device that is drawing more power than the hub can provide. Either use an external hub with an independent power plug or don’t use the device.

I would appreciate any suggestions from the expert and amatur.
